Clearly Grubstreet is not bigwig enough for Cosatu. For two days I’ve been asking the union’s spokesman, Patrick Craven, for comment on general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi’s statement that company executives should have their fat salaries and perks slashed. Read the story at The Sowetan here.
We are rejecting with contempt the flurry this week from some of the conservatives who have now called on workers to soften their wage demands…To them we say, direct your calls to the fat cats who are living beyond the means of economy and not to the working poor…This pain must be shared. These criminal salaries and perks should be cut to the bare minimum as part of companies preparing to meet this economic downturn.
I’ve emailed Mr Craven twice and left two messages on his cellphone explaining politely what I’m after. As he’s a busy man (there’s all those workers to attend to and penniless bloggers bugging him for comment after all), I said I just wanted to put one question to him:
How much does Mr Vavi earn as Cosatu general secretary and what are his perks?
Alas, there has been no comment forthcoming, let alone an email or SMS to say “No comment” so we’ll have to take it that Comrade Vavi is busy sharing the pain.

As l live in the UK l have no idea what the fat-cats in SA earn but we have the same problem here and, if you read British news you will see that our government is on the verge of collapse and our prime minister Gordon Brown unlikely to last much longer, The real reason for this is the the fat-cats dined just a bit too long at the trough, the food is gone and the British people are extremlely angry , they will punish the main parties at the Euro elections tommorow with a vengance unseen in modern politics, a lesson for SA perhaps? With a deep recession, high unemployment and people struggling to make ends meet,—thats what we feel, that those at the top should feel some of the pain!
