Earth Hour, Schmurf Hour

Earth Hour is an utterly ridiculous proposition. What good will switching off our lights for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday do for Earth? Very little, except that we’ll all feel virtuous for showing that we care about the environment earthand then go on buying food jetted across the world, consuming vast amounts of petrol by operating two-car (and three-car) families and leaving all our appliances on stand-by.

I discovered recently this silliness began in Australia in 2007 so it is Down Under I went to see what the natives think of it. Most of it was quite soppy but then I came across this spoof vid shot during Earth Hour on March 29, 2008. It’s quite a laugh:

So will I be switching off my lights come Saturday night? You betcha! It’s silly but it’s still cool… And I’ll be checking out my street to see which neighbours are too ingnorant or uncaring to take part in the grand gesture.
